Since they couldn’t read and write, I only spoke Nawat.

Many years passed, and when I was 47 years old I worked for the Town Council. I was there for two years, but as it didn’t pay well, I left and went to work in the fields.

Helping the Language

Singing for God

In 1960 I started attending the Catholic Church.

“Call him over, I want to speak to him.”

So they called me over and I went to talk to him, and he said to me:

—Tay tina? Tiweli tiaw ne domingo ka ne tiupan San Antonio?

“What do you say? Can you come to San Antonio Church on Sunday?”

—Tay tina? Tiweli tiaw ne domingo ka ne tiupan San Antonio?

“What do you say? Can you come to San Antonio Church on Sunday?”

And I said that I would come.

How I Started Working On Nawat

On Sunday I went to the church, and when I arrived he said to me:

“Are you the fellow who sang a song that time in the church in Santa Catarina?”

“Yes, I’m the one, why?”

—Ka naja niknekiskia ma shiwi timusenpua nikan iwan tumajmanujwan wan shikinmachti taketzat Nawat. Tiawit timetztashtawat pal metzti ume tzunti tumin. Ken tina? Nemi yek?

“Because I’d like you to come and join our brethren here and teach them to speak Nawat. We’ll pay you 200 colones a month. Well, what do you say?”

So after four years of meetings Iwas offered a job at the House of Culture.

That year I went to Honduras; in 1993 I went to Mexico (I was in the state of Campeche); in 1994 I went to Guatemala (I accompanied a junior Tempisque dance group); in 1995 I went to Mexico again (I was in the province of Tlashkala, where we met native-language-speaking craftsmen); and in 2000 I went to Paraguay.

I have done all this with the help of God, and the help of my head!

PART TWO People and God

The Way My Village Used To Be

They say that when the village started, there were not many houses, only thirty-two, and the houses were surrounded by trees.

The inhabitants couldn’t speak Spanish, and they didn’t know how to read and write. So when the white men came, they didn’t understand what the men and women were saying.

How We Prayed

They didn’t realise, as we now know, that there is a God whom we didn’t know. They recognised the things they could see, such as the sun, the rain, the land, maize, trees, and nature, which provided their food, game, and fruit-bearing trees for food so as not to endure hunger.

All that we are given is what we need.

Therefore everybody prayed when they saw the sun rising and asked it to protect us through the day until dark.

And at dusk they prayed again to give thanks for having survived the day without mishap.

This is how they began:

Father Sun

Father Sun, we thank you for having risen to stay with us all day to give us light and warm us so that we will not suffer cold because without your warmth we could die of cold.

We also thank you because the trees blossom on account of you in order to bear fruit which grows, then ripens and when ripe is picked for eating.

For this we thank you, Father Sun, because you make the trees bear fruit.

Tlaloc

We ask you, oh Tlaloc! when you see that Father Sun is very angry with us, to come and spray us so that he doesn’t kill us in his anger,

and we also ask you never to abandon us for if you leave us Father Sun may kill us in his anger.

Taja, Tiut Tlalok, timetzmunekit pal tiijyukwit ka su te tiijyukwit, su te tinemi tuwan, tesu tiwelit tinemit yultuk. Yajika padiush, Tiut Tlalok.

Oh Tlaloc! we need you to breathe for if we do not breathe, if you are not with us, we cannot live. Therefore we thank you, Tlaloc.

Taja, Tiut Tlalok, timetzmunekit pal tiijyukwit ka su te tiijyukwit, su te tinemi tuwan, tesu tiwelit tinemit yultuk. Yajika padiush, Tiut Tlalok.

The Rain Goddess

Mother Rain, we thank you for making the fruit grow, for you irrigate the land so that the grass will germinate and the trees will grow green and blossom.

You, Mother Rain, do not see who is good, and who is evil; you flood all the earth so that the fields and the trees will flourish.

The River God

River God, we love you because you bathe us to keep us cool and wash our body clean of soil and we need you to wash our clothes, and to cook our food.
